Around 25 people are assisted by The Arc at this time and 4 group homes are maintained. Volunteers help with fund-raising and special events, office work and the newsletter, faculty maintenance, and a special program called the Buddy Program. Billy Graham Television/Telephone Ministry When the Billy Graham Ministry telecasts a program, dozens of of FBC members gather at the church to witness counsel and pray for viewers who call in. Volunteers answer the phone, do computer and office work, take part in the prayer room, and provide food. Visit the TVTM website.
Christian Women's Job Corps Developed by the National Women's Missionary Union, the Christian Women's Job Corps has a local site in Clyde, NC. Its purpose is to help women who have been dependent on government programs or family to become more independent through personal mentors and classes in Bible study, self-esteem, hygiene, computer skills and GED studies. Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Volunteers can help with childcare or transportation, by being mentors, and by teaching job skills. Good Samaritan Clinic Established to provide medical care to those who are uninsured and cannot afford it, this full-time, Christian-based, primary care clinic is staffed by both paid employees and dedicated volunteers. To date, over 5,000 uninsured adults have received medical care. Currently, volunteer needs are doctors, nurses, and receptionists. Habitat for Humanity Habitat for Humanity builds new homes for persons who are in need of a home of their own. Our local chapter is working on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays to construct two homes, one in Waynesville and one in Canton. Volunteers are used in all the tasks of home construction. This includes roofing, sheet rock, painting and a host of other construction skills. For more information, visit the Haywood Habitat website.
Haywood Christian Ministry This ministry provides food, clothing, and financial assistance for utilities, rent, fuel, and medications for the residents of Haywood County. It is an interdenominational effort founded and supported by the churches of Haywood County. Volunteers assist with interviewing applicants, picking up and sorting donations, working in the food bank and clothing area, and in the thrift store. For additional information, call 828-456-4838.
Haywood County Bible Clubs The purpose of Haywood County Bible Clubs are to reach children with the good news of the gospel. This is done through music, games, activities, and Bible lessons that are presented in fun and creative ways. They meet in public schools after hours.
Haywood Pro-Life Pro-Life offers free pregnancy tests, referrals for adoption and health care, clothing for mothers and babies including diapers, and education on abortion issues. Contact their office at 828-456-7454.
Hospice of Haywood Regional Medical Center Provides quality end-of-life and bereavement services, promoting comfort and dignity for those living with terminal illness. Volunteers assist with companionship visits, respite care, errands, bereavement support, and office assistance. For more information, contact Miles Smith at 828-452-8696.
Haywood Restoration House The mission statement of Haywood Restoration House is "To offer shelter that provides a supportive Christian environment for those seeking to improve themselves and their situations." Volunteers help with fund raising, transportation and case management, which involves meeting with individuals one a week.
K.A.R.E. - Kids Advocacy Resource Effort The primary child abuse and neglect prevention awareness organization in Haywood County, KARE has been changing lives for the better since its inception 15 years ago. Ministry volunteers assist with giving child abuse prevention programs in elementary school classes, fund-raisers, providing child care during various meeting, and helping churches begin parent support groups. Meals on Wheels Meal on Wheels delivers about 230 meals a day to the homebound throughout our county. Volunteers usually serve one morning a week and make a short visit as they deliver lunch. This enables those who live alone to see a friendly face and get a regular hot meal. To learn more about Meals on Wheels, visit their website. Nursing Homes Our area is blessed with many good nursing homes and volunteers enrich the lives of residents who live in them. Volunteers provide a variety of activities including calling Bingo, playing piano, reading to residents, crafts, help with meals, and taking mails and ice water to rooms. You can arrange to help by calling the activity directors at various nursing homes:
Open Door Ministries The vision of the Open Door Ministries is to feed the hungry and provide a safe Christian environment that offers Christ-centered educational programs and assistance to everyone. They do this by providing hot meals (breakfast and lunch Monday-Friday, dinner on Saturday, and lunch and dinner on Sunday), clothing assistance for new jobs, and a special ministry for ex-inmates and families. They operate a thrift shop (Second Blessing) to help finance their programs. Volunteers are needed to cook, serve, and clean up the meals and work in the thrift shop. REACH of Haywood County REACH is a private nonprofit organization which provides emergency services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. They provide a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency shelter, and legal and court assistance. Volunteers are trained to take hotline calls on evenings and weekends and to help in their thrift stores, including waiting on customers and collecting donations. Red Cross In addition to their blood drives, the Red Cross assists with disasters, both locally (fires and floods) and nationally (hurricanes and tornadoes); teaches classes in First Aid, CPR and water safety; and provides assistance to our service persons and veterans.
